If you’re thinking of working at McDonald’s to pay for your education in the next few years, you’ll have to hurry.
With the COVID19 crisis, the food service sector was hit hard and junk food temples did not escape from the carnage.
In the United States (the country with more than 15,000 McDonald’s restaurants) 97% of the establishments have not received any customers since the beginning of the pandemic. 97% !!! If you count correctly, only 450 restaurants have remained fully open. A hecatomb.
So at McDonald’s, Chris Kempczinski, the CEO of the company said, « They’re being nice to their pandemic, but oh, hey, let’s not mess around too much with the turnover. We’ve got people to feed a lot ».
And that’s almost how McDonald’s new strategy for the coming years came about. Drive, drive, drive. Ah! And the voice assistant (that’s for the student job).
Actually, some franchisees have already taken the step and welcome you with a charming robot that takes your order.
And McDo has also invested heavily ($300 million) to acquire Dynamic Yield, a Tel Aviv-based startup specializing in Big Data, whose solution will in particular make it possible to anticipate according to the weather, traffic conditions, time of day, the orders to be prepared to speed up production rates (for students who would still like to work there).
Of course, such innovations will require a total overhaul of the restaurants and accesses. There will be drives and fast drive lines for people who have ordered on cell phones, and who will be geolocated as they approach restaurants (see video below)…
… to retrieve the menu ordered quickly without waiting…
It remains to be seen if the rest of the world will follow. Although, in fact, it will have no choice.
